‘I want to get back to my life’: Turned away by US embassy, Massachusetts teen stuck in Colombia

But after attending a funeral in her native Colombia six weeks ago, Fernandez lost her green card at the airport. She joins a growing number of green card holders who haven’t been able to return to the United States since the start of the pandemic as embassies and consulates halt services. While Massachusetts family court designated her aunt in Revere as her guardian, the U.S. Embassy in Bogota is doing nothing to help her return.

“It is an emergency for me. I miss my family. I miss my mom,” Fernandez told MassLive of her aunt, Lorena Fernandez, in a phone interview. “I miss being with her.”
